What Is the Life in the UK Test?
The Life in the UK Test is a compulsory requirement for anyone applying for British citizenship (naturalisation) or indefinite leave to remain (settlement) in the United Kingdom. It tests your knowledge of British values, history, traditions, and everyday life.
The test was introduced in 2005 and was last significantly updated in 2013. It is administered by the Home Office and can be taken at approved test centres across the UK.
Who Needs to Take the Test?
You need to pass the Life in the UK Test if you are applying for:
- Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR / Settlement)
- British Citizenship (Naturalisation)
Exemptions
You may be exempt if you are under 18, over 65, or have a long-term physical or mental condition. Check the official gov.uk website for current exemption criteria.
How to Book the Test
Create an account
Register at the official Life in the UK Test booking website (lifeintheuktest.gov.uk).
Choose a test centre
Select from over 30 test centres across the UK. Choose one convenient to you.
Pay the fee
The test costs £50. Payment is by debit or credit card online.
Attend on test day
Bring your valid passport or BRP card. Arrive at least 15 minutes early.
Test Format
- All questions are multiple choice
- Questions are randomly selected from a bank covering all topics
- You take the test on a computer at an approved test centre
- Results are given immediately after you finish the test
